What's in a Name?

I can use your input. It's personal.

I was born Heather Lee Gaudet, daughter of Jerry and Maggie Gaudet; in college I chose to take on my mother's maiden name, MacKenzie. For years I went by Heather MacKenzie-Gaudet.

It was at a Spring Equinox ceremony many years ago that I chose to add three more letters to my name: Ash. This tiny word symbolized two things I cherished: the phoenix fires of change purifying the old, and the ash tree, which in Nordic tradition is called Yggdrasil, the world tree. Ash reminded me to continually purify and release the past and to send my roots deep into earth and my branches wide out to the sky.

For those of you that are curious about where my current last name came from: When Raven and I got married I changed my last name to Amara, to honor the transition of moving into a new phase in my life. Amara is the name of our angelic goddaughter in Peru (the daughter of our dear friend, Peruvian mystic Jorge Luis Delgado.) Amara also has a hidden meaning for me: In spanish the letter "a" means "to." Amara can be read "a mara", or to the goddess, mara. It can also be read backwards: "a rama", or to the god, rama. Amara reflects my intent to keep moving towards spirit and honor both the goddess and the god, the male and female aspects of the divine.

Here is where I can use your help. For a long time I was happy being called either Heather or Heather Ash; today I am wanting to claim the richness of my birth and chosen names. I'm noticing as I meet more and more people that less and less people call my by my preferred first name, Heather Ash. I've been pondering how to shift the perception of Ash being my middle or part of my last name. Hmmm....

So the question I pose to you, dear friends, is this: Should I take out the space or hyphenate? Should I write my name HeatherAsh Amara or Heather-Ash Amara? I welcome your input!

We have been in a huge creative phase dreaming up lots of new programs, and we are very open to any suggestions or requests you have. We are here to serve you... Let us know your thoughts! Some breaking news: There has been a marriage in our family! The Toltec Center of Creative Intent and Spiritual Integrity workshops and journeys are now one magical entity. The Toltec Center is a non-profit spiritual organization, and all Spiritual Integrity creations are now under the auspices of TCCI. The new website is now available at http://www.spiritualintegrity.com. HUGE gratitude to Nicole Bivens and Cynthia McPherson for their work blending the two sites.

I Quit!
Blog post • February 2009 This morning I fired myself from running my life. To be fair, I've done a pretty good job up to this point. I'm in a great relationship, I love where I live, I love my work. I have great friends and a sweet dog. But I have noticed that I keep getting in my own way. I know that the universe is infinite and boundless yet I keep acting as if there were limits. I know my replacement will do a much better job of running things than I have.
